Courtesy of the National Pecan Shellers Association, here are some some tasty fun facts you might not know about our favorite nut.
- It would take 5,640 pecan halves to equal the weight of a regular watermelon
- Pecans come in a variety of sizes including mammoth, extra large, large, medium, small and midget
- There are over 1,000 types of pecans, and most are named for Native American Indian tribes
- Pecans provide almost 10% of the daily recommended value for zinc
- Senator Max Cleland (D-Georgia) asked his colleagues to join him in celebrating National Pecan Month, and now it takes place every April
- Pecans are an excellent source of protein and can be used as a meat substitute
- Eating one ounce of pecans is the equivalent of two servings of the USDA meat and bean group and two teaspoons of oil
- Although heavily used for holiday dishes, pecans are available all year long and can be used in everyday dishes such as salads, side dishes and snacks
