Pecan Store December 17th, 2009

I’m a big fan of the Tips, Tools & Ingredients section of bonappetit.com. You can find information on pretty much everything you want to know regarding cooking and cooking-related items, whether it’s how to segment citrus or salt-roast a pork loin.
I found the page they did on pecans, and while I’ve talked about most of this on the blog before, it never hurts to have a refresher on how to buy, use and store pecans.
Check it out here and then browse around their other tips, tools and ingredients.

I always seem to get stuck in this rut about what to do for dinner. It feels like almost every day, I’m searching for something new, something to break out of the dinner mold. And it’s not usually the main dish that’s the problem. I most often times find myself asking, “What do I serve with this?”
The problem is that I feel like the plate looks so bare without a nice tasty side dish or vegetable. And whenever I feel like there’s just a little too much white space on a plate, I hop onto Search.MyRecipies.com for the answer to my problem.
Just type “Pecan” in the search field and you will easily come back with 1,000s of recipes from breakfast to lunch, dinner to dessert. My latest find for my side dish dilemma? Cheddar-Pecan Green Bean Casserole. It looks oh so tasty, and it’s filled with cheesy, pecan, green bean goodness.
Just go online and check it out. You’ll thank me and then wonder what you ever did without this site.

I love all things kitchen and baking. I know it can be a bit on the pricey side, but I really do enjoy shopping for fun gadgets, baking mixes and professional kitchen tools. While I was browsing through Williams-Sonoma the other day, it dawned on me that I already have so many great kitchen tools, I don’t know what I would do without them. So, I made a list of my top 5 favorites:
- Citrus Juicer – I love that I don’t have to purchase an expensive juicer to get fresh squeezed citrus. Nor do I have to fiddle with an old-fashioned juicer that makes me feel like all that effort got me so little. This handy little gadget does it all for me and manages to get every last drop possible.
- Rabbit Corkscrew – I’ve had mine for so long, I hardly remember what it was like opening a bottle of wine without it. No more cork pieces floating around in the bottle. No more struggling or needing two people for one simple task. It’s a beautiful invention.
- Olive and Cherry Pitter – Have you ever tried to make homemade olive tapenade or bake anything with fresh cherries in it? If you have, then you probably have this handy tool on a pedestal. Simple and quick, just one press makes pitting cherries and olives as simple as can be.
- Apple Slicer – Yes, I’m aware that slicing an apple is not that difficult, but it saves a lot of time and it’s just fun to use.
- Mandoline – Perfectly slice, dice and julienne almost any fruit or vegetable you can think of. It’s kind of dangerous to use without the finger guard, but this thing is awesome! It’s great for entertaining because everything comes out looking so professional and, well, pretty.
What are some kitchen tools you can’t live without?
